Known to many from the Robin Hood tales, Sherwood Forest is a large wooded area estimated to be around 1,049 acres of thriving woodland with a range of species to view. The site itself is a former part of a royal hunting ground which has since developed into a large, Oak forest with plenty of ancient oaks thriving for more than 500 years, this includes the legendary Major Oak which is estimated to be around 1,000 years old and a firm favourite by many to see.

Your Community Ranger for Sherwood Forest is Indy Kiemel-Greene. Indy is a RSPB volunteer at Sherwood Forest having been involved in the site since a young age. He has appeared on BBC Springwatch, and was a guest presenter on 8 out of 10 Bats.

What to expect to see

During the different seasons, you can expect to see a variety of species of insect, bird and mammals all using the extensive woodland.

On the ground, you can spot mammals such as voles and shrews, perhaps the odd Hedgehog too. Keep your eyes out for signs of larger mammals such as Fallow Deer, Badgers and Foxes who all use the trails around the site. Flying around the plants and the woodland itself you can spot Small Heath, Small Skipper, Lesser Swallow prominent moth, Smoky Wainscot and other common butterflies and moths, during the summer have a look on the various plants for caterpillars munching away.

Birds are possibly the most prominent and sought after at Sherwood Forest. Evenings will provide unfortgetable experiences of seeing the eerie wings of a Nightjar flying from its perches or the loud call of the Tawny Owls. Spring you may spot Woodlands, Tree Pipit, Common Redstart and Cuckoo with their unmissable calls, Winter months is a great time to head out and look for Goldcrests, Common Crossbill and Lesser Spotted-woodpeckers.
