DIY: Hibernaculum

We look at adding homes to our garden for a variety of species such as Hedgehogs and Birds, but we often forget about the species that need homes that perhaps need a bit of a speciality space created for them. Let’s focus on reptiles, amphibians and small mammals and lets build them a hibernaculum in the garden.

Now, this doesn’t need to be a huge space. I have built a small one in the garden using two small drainage pipes, but I have also built one on a nature reserve using 100cm wide pipe to allow bigger species to pass through – smaller is better for our gardens as we normally don’t see these larger species like Badgers regularly but that’s not to say consider it if you have larger species!
