Mammals at night

Discover the forest after dark on a guided night walk in the magical Forest of Dean. As daylight fades, a whole new world of mammals awakens and we’ll be there to experience it.

Wild Boar & Fallow Deer photos from Arron Roberts. Mammals found at night in the Forest of Dean.

Armed with a thermal imaging camera as night falls, we’ll scan the woodland edges and open clearings in search of elusive mammals. With a bit of luck, we may spot Wild Boar rooting around, Fallow Deer, Foxes and maybe even a Pine Marten! Don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for the magical sparks of Glow Worms shining along the forest floor.

Our expert Wild Experiences Guide will also be using a bat detector to identify any Bats foraging along the forest rides.

This is a rare opportunity to witness the forest’s secret life at night, using technology that reveals what the naked eye cannot see. Along the way, we’ll share fascinating insights about the behaviour, ecology, and conservation of these remarkable nocturnal species.

  • At the start of your Mammals at Night Walk, you’ll be met by your Wild Experience Guide, Arron.
  • Approximate location is New Road, Lydney, Gloucestershire, GL15 4JS.
  • After meeting your guide, we will take a leisurely stroll through the forest to the areas where wildlife is most active.
  • Whilst the entire route will be on hard gravel paths, sturdy outdoor shoes are still recommended.
  • You may wish to bring a torch or head torch to assist with the walk.
  • As this is a summer evening event, we recommend bringing insect repellent and avoiding any strong perfumes or aftershaves.

  • Unfortunately, no dogs (except assistance dogs) are permitted on this walk.
  • Whilst there is no lower age limit for the walk, please be aware that it is scheduled to finish at approximately 22:30, and, due to the sensitive nature of the species, we will need to be as quiet as possible.
  • Don’t forget your binoculars and/or camera.
  • Our route will follow a hards gravel paths throughout.
  • Our aim is to make our walks as accessibility-friendly as possible. If you’d like to find out more about this event, please send any questions to our team.
