Nightjar & Nocturnal Wildlife Walk

Step into the twilight and discover the secrets of the forest after dark on our guided evening walk in the beautiful Forest of Dean.

With their mechanical churring call, cryptic plumage, and nocturnal displays the Nightjar is one of the UK’s most unusual (and most elusive) birds.

Join our expert Wild Experience guides on a warm summer’s evening in the magical Forest of Dean. As dusk settles, we’ll listen for the unmistakable churring call of the elusive Nightjar and watch for their silent, moth-like flight across the heath.

The forest comes alive at night, and equipped with a thermal imaging camera, we’ll be on the lookout for other forest wildlife with possibilities of Wild Boar, Fallow Deer, Bats, Roding Woodcock and Owls.

  • Free parking is available at Speech House Car Park
  • At the start of the Nightjar walk, you’ll be met by your Wild Experience Guide, Arron at Woorgreens Lake, Speech House Woodlands car park.
  • After meeting your guide, we will be taking a leisurely stroll through the forest to the spots where the Nightjars are most active.
  • The entire route will be on hard gravel paths, but sturdy outdoor shoes are still recommended.
  • You may wish to bring a torch or head torch to assist with the walk.
  • As this is a summer evening event, we recommend bringing insect repellent and avoiding any strong perfumes or aftershaves.
  • We also advise long sleeves and light layers as the temperature will drop after dark.
  • Dogs (except assistance dogs) are not permitted on this walk.
  • Whilst there is no lower age limit for the walk, please be aware that the walk is scheduled to finish at approximately 22:30, and due to the sensitive nature of the species, we will need to be as quiet as possible.
  • Don’t forget your binoculars and/or camera
  • Our route will follow a hards gravel paths throughout.
  • Our aim is to make our walks as accessibility-friendly as possible. If you’d like to find out more about this event, please send any questions to our team.
