Butterflies of the blue: Somerset
Somerset boasts some of the most beautiful and important butterfly species in the UK, and in particular a good number of the ‘Blue’ family members.
Join us for a special summertime event as we go in search of these ‘jewels’ of the grasslands.
On the southern slopes of the Mendip hills, species-rich, nutrient-poor limestone downland are the ideal habitat for a plethora of special invertebrate life and a mosaic of wildflower meadows.
During our walk, the species of ‘blues’ we’ll be looking out for include the enigmatic Chalkhill Blue, the tiny Small Blue, the lilac-hued Common Blue, the zippy Brown Argus and the elusive and mighty Adonis Blue.
As well as the ‘Blues’ we might also encounter Silver-washed fritillary, Dark-green fritillary, Clouded yellow, Ringlet, Meadow brown, Painted lady, Dingy skipper, Grizzled skipper.
Other than butterflies, there’s a possibility of seeing day-flying moths such as Hummingbird hawkmoth, Scarlet tiger moth and Mother Shipton. We’ll also be on the lookout for birds such as Garden warbler, Spotted flycatcher, Redstart, Bullfinch, Red kite, Raven, Peregrine.
If the weather is sunny, there is also a potential for Adder, Grass snake, Common Lizard and Slow worm.
