Day One

Breaking the drive to the far southwest, our first stop is the mature oak woodland of Yarner Wood. This is a premier site for the elusive Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, which can be found feeding in the high canopy alongside wandering winter tits.
Moving further south to the steep coastal slopes of Labrador Bay, we will target the Cirl Bunting, a regional speciality that gathers in winter feeding flocks on the stubble fields. We then arrive at our comfortable base surrounding the iconic Hayle Estuary.

Day Two

The morning begins with a dedicated scan of the Hayle Estuary, tracking the rising tide for the celebrated returning Ring-billed Gull. The mudflats here will be alive with thousands of wintering waders, including Eurasian Whimbrel, Common Greenshank, and large flocks of Golden Plover. In the afternoon, we shift focus to Mounts Bay and the busy fishing harbour of Newlyn.
This area is the premier winter station for scarce ocean wanderers. We will search carefully among the mixed schools for the famous returning Pacific Diver, Glaucous Gull, and Iceland Gull. Before dusk, we will stop by the Jubilee Pool in Penzance to locate the remarkably approachable Purple Sandpiper feeding along the rocky granite structures.

Day Three

We begin the morning with a short drive to Helston Boating Lake, where the sheltered, overhanging vegetation provides excellent, eye level views of wintering Common Firecrest. From Helston, we travel west into the rugged landscape of West Penwith to watch the acrobatic flights of the Red-billed Chough against the granite cliffs at Sennen.
The afternoon balances wildlife with deep history as we visit the dramatic, elevated dolmen of Lanyon Quoit, which stands as a powerful testament to the region’s Neolithic past. We will also step back into Cornwall’s industrial heritage with a guided tour of a historic tin mine, exploring the rugged cliffside architecture that defines this coastline.
To finish the day, if recent sightings have been reported, we will position ourselves overlooking the wild West Penwith moors at dusk to search for a ghost like Hen Harrier returning to its winter roost.

Day Four

A final morning high tide watch around the Hayle ensures we catch any missing gulls or newly arrived wintering wildfowl before heading back north, concluding a highly focused, comfortable winter expedition.
