Ghana is famous for its immense biodiversity, rich history, and vibrant culture. On this 10-day trip, you’ll experience expert local guidance in both flora and fauna, as well as local knowledge of where your target species could be.

Whilst birds are a brilliant focus, you’ll also have many opportunities to search for rare mammals like Diana Monkey, Chimpanzee, Pangolin, Bongo and Forest Elephant.

Day One – Arrival in Ghana

Arrive at Kotoka International Airport where you’ll be met by your local guide and driver, ready to transport you to your hotel for the night. You’ll be staying close to the Shai Hills Reserve where you might be able to spot the Northern White-faced Owl.

Day Two – Shai Hills and Cape Coast

On your first morning, the open grassland of Shai Hills Reserve await you. Spot various bird species like Yellow-fronted Tinkerbird, Swallow-tailed Bee-eater, White-crowned Cliff-chat and the spectacular Violet Turaco. Exploring the local area will see lots of historic sights like 30m high lighthouse built in 1871 and a beautiful fishing boats.

Day Three – Canopy Walk and Kakum National Park

A very early start will get us the best chance to see and hear the spellbinding dawn chorus of the Kakum National Park. Standing on a walkway 40m above the forest floor, we’ll hope to spot Rosy Bee-eater, Yellow-billed Turaco, Blue-throated Roller, White-crested Hornbill, Emerald Cuckoo, Violet-backed Hyliota and the Blue-throated Brown Sunbird. The afternoon holds a relax by the pool, in your rooms or at the bar, or head out for some more birding. Returning to the canopy walk in the evening, we’ll search for more birds like Brown Nightjar and Fraser’s Eagle Owl.

Day Four – Antwikwaa and Cape Coast Castle

Another early start again and search for more incredible bird species. We’ll explore the Cape Coast Castle which is a UNESCO site to learn more about it’s infamous history, ending the day with a bit of nocturnal birding.

Day Five – Kakum Forest, Elmina and Ankasa Reserve

Exploring these stunning areas, we’ll concentrate on farmland scrub, forest edge and forest trails, searching for Sunbirds, Mannikins and flycatchers. Before we head to our next stop, we’ll be stopping at Elmina, a fishing community, famed for their colourful boats. We’ll be journeying to Ankasa Reserve, Ghana’s only wet evergreen rainforest, in the late afternoon. You can choose to stay at a private camp inside the forest or in a basic guesthouse close to the forest. This location is perfect for Eagle Owls and will be the perfect opportunity to search for the Nkulengu Rail.

Day Six and Seven – Birding Ankasa Reserve

We’ll spend two days exploring the immense forest of Ankasa. This forest is home to so many rare and elusive species. Before breakfast is the perfect time to search for the Nkulengu Rail and after eating, we’ll head to the deeper parts of the forest, searching for endemics like Yellow-bearded Greenbul, Tiny Sunbird and the rare dwarf crocodile. Scan the skies for the Crown Eagle and try to find Grey-throated Rail. Searching through forest trails for different mammals like Bongo, Diana Monkey and Forest Elephant. Setting off towards Kakum national Park and searching for other rarities along our journey back.

Day Eight – Abrafo Forest and Picathartes Nesting Site

This day is special, focusing specifically on the Yellow-headed Picathartes. A morning of birding before visiting this special bird will hope to tick off a few more targets. Heading northwards to a small remove village near upper guinea rainforest in the Ashanti region of Ghana, learn more about the conservation efforts of the team and what they’re doing to help protect this vital area.

Day Nine – Villages, Traditions and Birding in Bobiri Butterfly Sanctuary

Enjoy an incredible day of rich culture and history. Learn more about the lives of the people living here and traditions and be lucky enough to create your own vibrant adinkra cloth. Explore the wonderful butterfly sanctuary and seek more incredible bird species.

Day Ten – Butterfly Sanctuary and Departure

On our final morning, we’ll explore the Bobiri Butterfly Sanctuary and hope to see Cuckoo-shrike, Golden-backed Weaver, Dusky Tit, Blue-headed Crested Flycatcher and the much sought after Yellow-footed Honeyguide. We’ll stop for delicous meals before transferring you back to the airport for your departure.
