Growing Tips & Tricks
When harvesting from your Strawberry pant, remember to pull the strawberries or cut the green stalks off when they are bright red. If they come away easily, they’re ripe and ready to eat!
To make the Strawberry Syrup;
- Cut the tops off the strawberries and keep them aside. You can keep the leaves on as they add a delicious flavour to the overall syrup.
- Put your water in a pan and add your strawberry tops. Bring it to a boil.
- Once boiling, reduce the temperature and leave it to simmer for 5 minutes. Brewing for 5 minutes leaves you with a sweet and floral flavour. Overboiling can make the mixture a little bitter.
- Strain the leaves with a sieve and pop into a jug. Use this to measure the amount of sugar you need, e.g. if 100ml of water, add 100g of sugar.
- Pop it back onto the heat, add the sugar, stir and let the sugar dissolve. Once dissolved, let it cool down to room temperature.
- Once cool, pop it into a jar or bottle and save it as a simple syrup to add to cocktails and mocktails alike.
For the cocktail
- Blend the strawberries in a blender. You can sieve the seeds out if you like by pushing the mixture through a sieve over a glass.
- Pop the strawberry puree back into the blender with the ice, rum, sugar, strawberry syrup and lime juice.
- Once blended, tip into a glass and enjoy.
And you’re done! Pair with a summery day for a sweet treat.
Feeling fancy?
You could add a cucumber swirl or a slice of lime to your cocktail. You can grow your own cucumbers for this too and these plants do well in sunny patios and climbing structures.
